I had an interesting conversation with one of my best friends last week that has really had me thinking about the way mess affects different individuals in different ways…
The reason organization and easy clean-up systems are necessary for me is because my brain truly cannot focus on whatever task is at hand. I see mess, I pick-up mess. And while it’s not inherently a bad thing to do that, it does prevent me from completing more urgent and necessary tasks. It’s a distraction. With full lives, we don’t have time to be distracted.
Seeing clutter in my home frankly puts me into a frenzy. If you don’t believe me, just ask my kids and husband!
One of my nearest and dearest is currently in a VERY full season of life right now. She has multiple children, is pursuing further and higher education, and has a full-time job. So naturally, when other important and necessary tasks demand our attention, the house is likely the first to go. The same is true for my friend.
While I would disagree with her about the state of order in home, she feels like it’s a bit chaotic. Unlike me, the mess doesn’t affect her ability to compete her schoolwork, focus on work, and meet the needs of her family. But what it says to her is that she is a failure. It masks the massive success and thriving that she is experiencing in every other area of her life and drowns out the truth. The truth is that she is a stellar mom, wife, employee, and friend.
All of our homes can get a bit out of order at some point or another. I’m curious to know, what does clutter, disorganization, and mess speak to you? Frenzy or Failure?
